‘Ilm al-hadith is among the sciences effective in understanding the words of ma‘sūmin (the Prophet and his infallible progeny). This science is divided into various branches such as rijāl (science dealing with transmitters of hadith) and fiqh al-hadith (appreciation of hadith). The question here is whether there are any instances of this science in the sayings of ma‘sūmin. It is in respect to this issue that Imam ‘Ali’s (A.S.) perspective in terms of ‘ilm al-hadith is studied in this article, consisting of the following: 1. Imam ‘Ali’s (A.S.) undertakings in promulgation of ahādith as well as encouraging people to act by the Prophet’s (S.A.W.) tradition and urging people to learn and write [to spread about] hadith; 2. The existence of fabricated ahādith in traditions; 3. Types of transmitters and traditions; 4. Imam ‘Ali’s (A.S.) principles in solving hadith discrepancy; 5. Principles of hadith comprehension, including the correction of distortions in the Prophet’s (S.A.W.) traditions; 6. Imam ‘Ali’s (A.S.) viewpoint concerning the sanad of ahādith; 7. The existence of sa‘b (difficult) and mustas‘ab (very difficult) ahādith in Imam ‘Ali’s (A.S.) narrations and his viewpoint in this regard. These points indicate that Imam ‘Ali (A.S.) has related some instances of ‘ilm al-hadith in his narrations and has emphasized on it as well, which proves the importance of this science from the perspective of the Imams (A.S.).

Iosef Horovitz – the Western hadith researcher – believes that the antiquity and origin of isnād (chain of transmitters) in Islamic tradition is the same as the Jewish oral tradition. He views the isnād system as an adaptation of the Jewish works. In the present writing, his view on this issue is critically reviewed. It is stated in this research that the basic origin of isnād is the attitude of the intellectuals and has no relation to other religions. Also, it seems that Horovitz has not been able to distinguish between the concept of isnād (systematic provision of chain of transmitters) and asnād (the documents existing in narrations) and this misimpression has affected his drawing conclusion.

The principle of context (siyāq) is among the functional principles, which many of the exegetes have used for interpreting the Qur’ān. The grand exegete, Ayatollah Javādi Āmuli, the author of the dignified Tafsir-i Tasnim has used this law throughout his interpretation in a palpable way for explaining the difficult meanings of the verses of the Qur’ān. This research is intended to study and analyze how the principle of context has been applied in Tafsir-i Tasnim in such frameworks as uncovering the omitted verb, recognition of the antecedent, critique of the traditions, and precedence of the Qur’ān over the recorded traditions. To achieve this crucial task, we have made use of the library method through examining the whole text.

Usūl al-Kāfi is a leading collection among the Shi‘a books of hadith in terms of antiquity, inclusiveness, abundance of traditions, specific order, and the validity of the traditions and its inclusion of Divine knowledge and ethics. Since dealing with ideological principles requires the intellect’s proof and validation, the late Kulayni has dealt with this issue by relying on numerous traditions. The present article seeks to explore the point that although the late Kulayni has founded this book on the basis of text, his intellectual approach is in such a way that reinforces the viewpoint that he intends to emphasize the status of intellect in Shi‘a theological school.

‘Allāma Hasan Musṭafavi authored Al-Tahqiq fi Kalamāt al-Qur’ān al-Karim in Arabic and in an alphabetical order in fourteen volumes within ten years. He has organized the words of the Qur’ān in terms of their roots. First, he has given the definitions of valid lexicons and literary books concerning the word, and then he has given his own view in Wa al-Tahqiq section. Under many of the non-Arabic words, he has given their roots and under every word he has enumerated the verse and verses in which that word or the words with the same root have been used. Reference to another word; using opinions of others; taking into consideration the same principle in all words; and paying attention to derivation, rhetorical sciences, and morphology and syntax are among the discourses brought up under each word.
