Abstract

Despite the undeniable importance of context in Qur’anic semantic analysis, previous studies have been largely descriptive and lack a coherent analytical–functional model. This research aims to address this theoretical gap by designing and validating the “Thirteen-Function Context Model” to analyze the semantic dynamics in the Holy Qur’an. Adopting an analytical–explanatory method, and integrating the foundations of Qur’anic studies with modern linguistics (semantics and pragmatics), the study models the role of context in meaning construction. The main innovation of this model lies in offering a comprehensive taxonomy that formulates thirteen precise contextual functions across four levels—semantic, syntactic, pragmatic, and discursive—thus elevating context from a mere auxiliary clue to a systematic analytical tool. Beyond known functions, the model introduces novel dimensions such as determining speech acts and elucidating their role in shaping the semantic network of the text, a level of coherence unprecedented in previous research. This framework provides practical tools for both interpreters and translators.
