In this article, after giving a literal definition of the two words zahk (laugh) and bukā’ (weep), these two are divided into the following sub-headings in respect to the the Qur’ānic verses, (for laugh) 1. Surprise, 2. Sarcasm, 3. Joy on the Resurrection Day, 4. Deprivation of laughter as punishment; (and for weep) 5. Sorrow, 6. Hypocrisy, 7. Separation, 8. Recognition of God, 9. Affection and mysticism, 10. Fear of divine punishment, and 11. Punishment for one’s action. For each heading, the related verse is given in respect to its interpretation and partly reviewed using the traditions in each case. In the end, after examining most of the verses in which laugh and weep are mentioned, it is concluded that in Islam only smiling in this world and laughing on the Resurrection is praiseworthy for the believers; and weeping, when out of recognition of God, is highly valued.
