Abstract

The role of the jurists and legal theorists (uṣūlīs) in development of the science of syntax, which has been the outcome of deliberations on the outer aspects of the Qur'an, is not unknown to anyone. However, a sense of negligence – in some periods – of the outer aspects of the Qur'an, including the employment of such tools as appealing to the principle of continuance (istiṣhāb) with a justification of various readings, caused the science of syntax to fail to enjoy the advancement expected from it. This issue prompted the writer to bring up some discourses in order to encourage the religious scholars to make their best endeavors in rendering profounder and more extensive research on the exterior aspects of the Qur'an and the Qur'anic sciences.
