Abstract

Internal conflictsin Khura san after Ha run's death caused the `Alawi uprising to be acceleratedin most cities. Spread of these uprisings eventually prompted Ma'mu n toinviteimam al-Rid a (A.S.) to Khura san. Some have presumed this action by Ma'mu n as attesting to his honestintention; however, the writer of the present article believes that under those circumstances he had no alternative but to join the Abbasid's enemy,i.e., the Alawis. Finally, the very political agents who urged Ma'mu n to propose vicegerency toimam al-Rid a (A.S.)incited him to hatch a plot to martyr theimamin order to reconcile with the Abbasids.
