Abstract

Ikhlās (sincerity) is purifying something of any other things, which by definition means whatever the person does or says is done or said with the intention of drawing close to God (Khawja Nasīr al-Dīn Ṭūsī). Ikhlās in faith, brought up in āyah 3 of Sūrat al-Zumar, is regarded by the writer of this article to consist of purity of beliefs, devotions, and other social conducts and occupations. Ikhlās in beliefs is that one's dogmas are adopted from the Divine Revelation.
Ikhlās in acts of devotion is that whatever is said and done is merely intended to draw close to God and be away from hypocrisy and desire for good reputation and other material and worldly purposes.
Ikhlās in business and vocation is that people's benefit and fulfilling their needs in transactions rather than one's own profit is taken into consideration. Thus, the trading or public services that are pursued with the intention of proximity to God will yield better results and products, and cause better social services and occupations.
