Revisiting Verses with Impression of Negating the Prophet’s Miracle Based on an Elucidation of the Essence and Manner of Suggested Miracles

Abstract
In a series of verses, there is a reference to refuting the disbelievers’ request for presenting a miracle. Some have considered these verses as evidence for the absolute negation of the Prophet’s miracles, including negation of the miracle of the Qur’an. In response, commentators have understood these verses as referring to specific suggested miracles. Yet, in defining suggested miracles and analyzing the related verses, there are numerous defects and issues that undermine the response to the aforementioned doubt and raise further problems. The current research, employing a library-based method and a descriptive-analytical approach, critiques and evaluates the interpretive views presented in this regard and analyzes the related verses. The findings show that although the verses denying miracles pertain to specific suggested miracles, suggested miracles do not merely mean “miracles requested by people”; indeed, many requested miracles have also been presented. The reality is that what is meant by suggested miracles in this term are diverse and adventurous requests made by stubborn opponents, without a genuine aim of reaching truth, and thus they have no influence on guiding people or proving prophethood. Furthermore, according to the popular view, the divine tradition has been that after presenting suggested miracles and the people’s denial, a punishment descends, and since the descent of punishment is null after the Prophet’s mission, the requests for suggested miracles are rejected. This is while, according to the Qur’anic verses, there is no implication that presenting suggested miracles leads to the descent of punishment; rather, there is an implication between completing the argument, with all its elements, and the descent of punishment. A correct analysis of this matter, in addition to providing a precise answer to the negation of the Prophet’s miracles, will be free from issues that opponents have used to reinforce the doubt."
