An Analysis of Forgiveness and Pardon in Transmitted Ethics: Emphasizing Moral Responsibility

Abstract
Islamic ethical teachings, grounded in the Qur’an and the tradition, advocate principles such as forgiveness, pardon, and overlooking to strengthen social bonds. This research aims to provide an ethical analysis of the status of forgiveness within transmitted ethics, focusing on the concept of moral responsibility associated with it. Employing a descriptive-analytical method, the data were examined by referencing verses from the Holy Qur’an and the traditions of the Household of the Prophet of God, while utilizing normative frameworks established in moral philosophy. The findings indicate that forgiveness in Islamic ethics is not absolute or unrestricted; rather, it entails different positions and consequences depending on the nature of the relationship and the level of action. Moral responsibility regarding social issues varies based on factors such as the motive and the severity of the transgression. From the perspective of Transmitted Ethics, a distinction must be made between individual forgiveness (pertaining to personal rights) and governance/social forgiveness (pertaining to public interest). In cases of conflict between these two levels, priority is given to collective interest and justice. Furthermore, the normative justifications for the duty to forgive are multidimensional: at times based on consequentialist expediency (such as fostering brotherhood and coexistence), at others rooted in religious deontology and the rights of others, and occasionally grounded in the cultivation of moral virtues.
