Abstract

One of the most important issues concerning the Qur’an is the possibility and the way of understanding the Qur’an, which is dealt with in principles of jurisprudence as the “authority of apparent meanings”. This topic includes opinions ranging from self-sufficiency of the Qur’an for its understanding to the impossibility of its understanding. The writer believes that Mīrzā Mahdī Isfahānī is among the contemporary jurisprudents who has presented a new exposition of the famous Imāmī jurists’ view, according to which the authority of apparent meanings can be proved, retaining the independence of the Qur’an and the ‘itrat (progeny of the Prophet – S.A.W.) in their authority.
