Abstract

Having studied the nature of wisdom (hikma) in schools of Peripatetics, illuminationism, and transcendentalism and its nature in Islamic texts, especially the Qur'an, this article draws the conclusion that wisdom in the Qur'an is both theoretical and practical. Making scholarly reference to the Qur'anic verses and reliable traditions as evidences, the writer proves that the Qur'anic wisdom enjoys a vast expanse of meaning, while it requires such sources as intellect, conscience, inner nature, and Revelation, and that the power of intellect and conscience does not enable man to do without the Revealed source in recognizing some of the realities of wisdom.
