On the Meaning of Āyah, "Do not Cast yourselves with your own Hands into Destruction"

Abstract

The meaning "Do not cast yourselves with your own hands into destruction" has been so commonly used for this āyah (Al-Qur'an, 2: 195), and because of its being versified in Mawlawī's poetry, it has been so well-accepted by people that it is difficult to assume another meaning for it. The writer has tried, while examining the perceived inconsistency of the middle phrasing with the beginning and the end of the āyah, to present to the readers a criticism of the validity of the common meaning and its factors.
