Zurārah ibn Aʿyan (d. 150 AH) was among the greatest jurists among the companions of Abū Jaʿfar al-Bāqir and Abū ʿAbdillāh al-Ṣādiq. He held a highly significant position within Imāmī Shiʿism and is considered the foremost figure of the first tier of the "Companions of Consensus" (*Aṣḥāb al-Ijmāʿ*). However, numerous reports regarding Zurārah's disputes with Abū ʿAbdillāh are narrated in sources such as al-Rijāl by al-Kashshī. In his article concerning al-Kashshī's Rijāl, Abdulaziz Sachedina argues that Zurārah had attained such a level of authority and leadership that it resulted in limiting the authority of Abū ʿAbdillāh, and it was for this reason that Abū ʿAbdillāh confronted him. In contrast, it seems that Zurārah's belief in the Imamate of Abū ʿAbdillāh was the same as his belief in the Imamate of Abū Jaʿfar; he considered both as his religious authorities. Nevertheless, he maintained an inquisitive and questioning stance towards both Abū Jaʿfar and Abū ʿAbdillāh and did not necessarily align with their theological positions at all times. It is likely for this reason, and also to protect Zurārah from the ruling authorities, that Abū ʿAbdillāh would speak critically of him. Despite all this, Zurārah remained a believer in the Imamate of Abū ʿAbdillāh until the end of his life and never questioned the fundamental principle of his religious authority.
