Among the ten canonical Qur’anic reciters, al-Kisāʾī recited verse 112 of Surah al-Māʾidah as “hal tastaṭīʿu rabbaka”—in the second person (addressing)—while the other nine recited it as “hal yastaṭīʿu rabbuka”—in the third person (narrating). This study aims to explore the origin of this divergence in recitation. Interpretive evidence suggests that the original and primary reading was in the third person. However, the apparent meaning of this reading raises the question: how could the disciples (ḥawāriyyūn) have doubted God's power? They were the chosen companions of Jesus and are affirmed by the Qur’an and doubting God's power implies disbelief and ignorance of God. Although this objection can be answered, some reciters either were unaware of the responses or did not find them convincing. Additionally, the lack of diacritical marks and vowel signs in the Uthmanic codex allowed for multiple readings. Consequently, to avoid the interpretive dilemma, the second-person reading was proposed.
