Ashāb al-Janna is the story of the people (owners) of the garden in Surat al-Qalam, verses 17 to 33, according to which, when the owners of the garden went there at dawn to gather the fruits so that the needy men might not consume them, to their astonishment they found it burned down like a harvested field with no trees or plants. Difference in ways of interpreting the terms lā yastathnūn (they did not make any exception), tā’if (a visitation), al-sarīm (a harvested field) in these verses has made the general interpretation of this story different.
However, as explicated by the Qur’ān it seems that night neither the garden burned nor turned into a harvested field; rather, by preserving the trees and plants of the garden, God implemented the exact decision of the people of the garden before they entered the garden and they found it deprived of fruits.
