Historical evidencesindicate that since fourth / tenth century Holy Mashhad has been a sacred place of worship for theinterested to perform their acts of devotion and to hold religious retreats. Similarly, religious ceremonies and mourning sessions forimam al-Husayn (A.S.) have been heldin the precinct of the Holy shrine ofimam al-Reza since sixth / twelfth century, too.
With the establishment of Mashhad as a city and since the reign of the Safavids, these ceremonies gained mor popularity and significance, and became specifically organized and ceremonious during the reign of Afsharid and Qajar dynasties. Some endowed properties were also allocated for the expenses of these ceremonies. The writer of the article has studied this historical trend along with presenting the relevant evidences and documentations.
