چکیده [English]

According to the primary accounts the Sanabad subte rranean canal supplied water to the surroundings of the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza (A.S.). It was e ndowe d to th e Ast an Q u ds R azavi and its a ntiquity is also ve ry important.
The origin of this subterranean canal is located at Chehel Bazeh ditch near
the G olestan dam and its length is approximately 9200 metres flowing from west to east.
On its water course it used to irrigate the lands in Aab Kuh and Saadabad areas and appeared above the ground at the Sarab gate and finally flowed in the water reservoir of the Sahn-i Atiq (the present Inquilab Islamic) courtyard of the H oly Shrine, while passing through residential quarters in Sarab and Bagh-i Anbar localities.
This subterranean canal was repaired and renovated many times and was operating until 1964. Since then its wate r level has subsided and with the expansion of the city its wate r course has bee n se riously hampe re d. The Sanabad and Sarab avenues in the Holy city centre of Mashhad still refreshes the memories of this old subterranean canal.
