The commentators of two great sects of Islam have presented various viewpoints over time regarding the verse: "This day have I perfected your religion for you..." (5:3), some of which overlap, while others are entirely distinct. By examining the interpretive opinions, it is often observed that certain interpretations have gained more acceptance and peaked in specific centuries, while contrasting views have been weakened. Among these, there are also commentators who have highlighted a view contrary to the prevailing interpretive currents of their time, even distinct from their own doctrinal approaches. Reflecting on how these commentators have engaged with the mentioned verse emphasizes the necessity of conducting a thorough study with a quantitative approach, followed by qualitative analysis of the results to better understand the interpretive opinions. This research addresses how the volume of commentators' statements correlates with historical fluctuations. The findings reveal a significant relationship between the variations in the volume of the commentators' statements and the historical developments of their contemporaries. Consequently, depending on societal conditions, commentators have varied in their approaches, including silence, prudent dissimulation, and the development of interpretive discussions. For instance, during critical periods like the Mongol invasion or the Seljuk era, there was little opportunity for scholarly discourse, leading to a decline in interpretive works. However, during times of political power for either group, there was an increase in the volume of related interpretations as they aimed to critique and respond to the views of opposing groups. For example, during the Ilkhanate and Safavid periods, the volume of Shia interpretations concerning the authority of Imam Ali (A.S.) significantly increased due to socio-political circumstances.
