Grammatical Inflexion of Qur’anic verses is a fundamental aspect of Qur’anic studies and Arabic syntax, which has consistently drawn the attention of both exegetes and grammarians, resulting in a vast body of literature. The existence of multiple valid syntactic readings for Qur’anic terms and phrases - stemming from divergent grammatical, exegetical, and linguistic perspectives - necessitates a process of preference based on preferential factors. Despite the significance of these preferential factors, their specific roles and functions in the selection process have rarely been studied systematically and independently. This research, employing a descriptive-analytical method with a focus on verses from Surah al-Baqarah, extracts various preferential factors and the corresponding preferences provided in authoritative grammatical and exegetical sources. It then classifies and analyzes the cited criteria into two categories: textual (e.g., context, syntactic structure, and lexical and rhetorical evidence) and extra-textual (e.g., exegetical narrations, poetic evidence, scholarly consensus and opinions, and religious background). The findings demonstrate that among the preferences reported in these sources, textual criteria, particularly context, are cited most frequently, followed by syntactic and narrative evidence. By elucidating the dominant pattern of preferential factors in determining syntactic readings, the results of this study contribute to a more precise understanding of the methodology of preference in both grammatical and exegetical studies of the Holy Qur’an.
This current research employs a descriptive-analytical methodology, focusing on the verses of Surah Al-Baqarah. It extracts the i'rāb interpretations and preference selections reported in authoritative grammatical and exegetical sources. The preponderant factors cited for these selections are subsequently categorized and analyzed into two groups: Textual Factors(such as the context and setting of the verses, grammatical structure, and linguistic and rhetorical evidence) and Non-Textual Factors (such as interpretive narrations, poetic evidence, opinions of grammarians and exegetes, and religious contexts).
The research findings indicate that among the preference selections documented in these sources, Textual Factors, particularly the context and setting of the verses, exhibit the highest frequency of citation. Grammatical and narrative factors play the next most prominent roles, respectively. The results of this study illuminate the dominant pattern of factors used in selecting i'rāb interpretations and can assist in a more precise elucidation of the methodology for preference selection in the grammatical and exegetical studies of the Holy Qur'an.
