In his interpretation of the Qur’ān, ‘Allāma Tabātabā’ī has taken different criteria into consideration, on the basis of which has critically examined the viewpoints of different exegetes.
Some of these criteria include: correct recitation of the words and the verses of the Holy Qur’ān; revelation occasions of the verses; lack of careful attention to the rules of the Arabic literature; determining the meaning and concept of the single words and vocabulary of the Qur’ān; recognition and comparison of indication and the indicated; correct recognition of the antecedents; correct recognition of the verses being Meccan or Medinan; the role of the presuppositions and religious beliefs in the interpretation; correct recognition of the diacritical marks of the letters and words; incorrect application of some verses of the Qur’ān to the historical events, etc.
In this research, with a study of all the volumes of Al-Mīzān, the most important criteria of ‘Allāma Tabāṣabā’ī in his critical review of the exegetes’ viewpoints are extracted and categorized by the present method and with some examples given.
